CATS OF THE MONTH Erie10
Erie

In February of 2007, Animal Aide rescued a young, black cat who everyone was afraid to get close to. Those who dared were eventually able to pet the top of her head and only part way down her back. Eventually, she began to show an interest in things happening outside her cage and when it came time to hand out wet food for the thinner cats at the end of the day, her interest peaked. She was moved into a "big girl" cage and weekly socialization began. Turns out that she loved to be held and eventually formed an unbreakable bond with one person. What could this possible have to do with Erie, you might be asking yourself? Erie reminds me very much of that young, black cat. Erie was thought to be feral and plans were to have her spayed and released. However, she was diagnosed with an infection and was at the vet far longer than anticipated and by the time she was well, it was too late in the season to release her. Erie is not feral. Erie is scared to death. There is a big difference. Erie has learned to enjoy having her head and chin rubbed. She will even get up out of bed when you stop petting her and nudge your hand for more. These are not signs of a feral cat. Erie was recued November 10. 2012 and at that time, she was thought to be approximately 8 months old. Erie needs a lot of socialization and needs to feel that she can trust us. We don't know what sort of life Erie had before she was rescued but we do know what sort of life she can have in the future. Erie just needs to find that one special person to show her the way. How can I be so sure, you ask? Remember that young, black cat at the beginning of the story? She now sits on my lap when I watch TV and sleeps, snuggled beside me, every night. 333 Talbot St., St. Thomas, 519-633-3788

CATS OF THE MONTH Hogan10
Hogan - ADOPTED

Hogan was admitted into our care April 4, 2013, after being rescued from the pound. Hogan has been estimated to be only 2 years old by our vet. He definitely has that suave and sophisticated appearance that most tuxedo cats seem to have. His little goatee and minty, green eyes make him one of the more attractive boys in the shelter. Hogan has that friendly, affectionate and special personality that will make him a wonderful companion. Be a hero to Hogan and he just may end up being a hero to you. 333 Talbot St., St. Thomas, 519-633-3788

*Update Jan. 24, 2014: Hogan has been with us for almost a year, now. Some cats are able to handle the change in lifestyle that living in a cage entails and some don't do that well. Hogan still has those rugged good looks and gorgeous green eyes but, he has become a little unpredictable and impatient with some of the volunteers. For that reason, I am recommending that he not be adopted by a family with younger children who, can also be unpredictable and impatient. Not a good mix.

I always wish we had room for more, but when Trixie goes I think we'll probably just stick to the dog, Honey & Bastian for a while.

Hogan was adopted!!

New male cat of the month is:  Marcus
CATS OF THE MONTH Marcus10

We are the happy pet parents of a 12 year old. Our boy once had an uncertain future but, since he was brought home 6 years ago, he has become a happy, playful addition to the family. Yes, a 12 year old plays, has an excellent quality of life and a 12 year old could possibly live another 8 + years indoors. 12 year old Marcus was picked up by St. Thomas City Animal Services and saved from certain death on the streets. Marcus had already been neutered and had a "home". We will never know the circumstances of how Marcus ended up on the street but, we do know that there were better options available for him. Marcus loves attention and loves to be petted. He has a little bit of a fur issue but, the vet said that he has a flea allergy. Now that he has been treated for that, his fur should come back. So far, he seems like the perfect gentleman who deserves better. Let's not let Marcus linger here in a cage. Every day is a gift with an older cat so, how about giving Marcus the best gift he could ever receive...a home for the rest of his life. 333 Talbot St., St. Thomas, 519-633-3788
